Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District Wastewater Treatment Plants

Southwest Plant (SWP) – Electrical Work Includes:

• Power distribution upgrades to support expanded plant capacity and new process equipment.

• Electrical integration for new chemically enhanced primary clarifiers, aeration distribution systems, and grit piping improvements.

• Installation of control panels and motor starters for secondary clarifier improvements and sludge pump replacements.

• Demolition and safe electrical disconnection of existing nitrification towers and the dewatering building.

• Lighting and power systems for new and renovated structures, including the sludge storage tank and non-potable water system.

Northeast Plant (NEP) – Electrical Work Includes:

• Replacement and commissioning of combined heat and power (CHP) units, which utilize biogas to generate electricity and heat.

• Installation of a new biogas conditioning system, including electrical controls and instrumentation.

• Upgrades to digester gas piping and mixing equipment, with associated electrical connections and automation.

• Integration with plant-wide SCADA systems to ensure seamless monitoring and control of new equipment.

These electrical improvements will enhance the reliability, safety, and energy efficiency of UCSD’s operations, supporting long-term sustainability and service to over 150,000 residents and businesses in the district.
