Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District Wastewater Treatment Plants

Glesco Electric is providing electrical construction services for major upgrades at the Urbana & Champaign Sanitary District Southwest Plant (SWP) and Northeast Plant (NEP). The project includes extensive electrical infrastructure improvements to support expanded treatment capacity, process upgrades, and energy-efficient operations.

At the Southwest Plant, Glesco Electric is completing power distribution upgrades and electrical integration for new process systems, including chemically enhanced primary clarifiers, aeration distribution systems, and grit handling improvements. Scope also includes installation of control panels and motor starters for secondary clarifier upgrades and sludge pump replacements, along with demolition and safe electrical disconnection of existing equipment. Additional work includes lighting and power systems for new and renovated structures, including sludge storage and non-potable water systems.

At the Northeast Plant, Glesco Electric is installing and commissioning combined heat and power (CHP) units that utilize biogas to generate electricity and heat. The project also includes electrical infrastructure for a new biogas conditioning system, upgrades to digester gas systems and mixing equipment, and integration with plant-wide SCADA systems for monitoring and control.

These electrical upgrades enhance system reliability, safety, and energy efficiency while supporting long-term sustainability and expanded service capacity. This project highlights Glesco Electric’s experience in wastewater treatment electrical construction, process control systems, and energy infrastructure across Central Illinois.
